Digital switchover
What is digital switchover?
The analogue signal delivered to our television sets has served us well for 70 years, but it's now to be replaced, region by region, with a digital signal.
The benefits of receiving digital television are plenty and will include improved picture quality, more channels and the ability to access subscription channels.
The government is conducting a nation-wide awareness campaign as well as providing help for those people that need it most, so everybody can benefit from the switchover.
How will it affect me?
The switchover started in 2007 and will be completed by 2012.
If you want to watch TV in the UK after the switchover then you'll need to decide which digital signal you want to tune in to. There are already plenty of options including Sky, Virgin Media, freesat® and Freeview™, and the choice you make will determine how you are going to receive the signal.
You can receive a digital signal via an aerial, although separate digital equipment may be needed.
How do I receive Freeview?
When your region is switched over, you will, as long as you have the right equipment, automatically receive most, if not all, Freeview channels.
To tune into them, you will need a digital receiver connected to your TV/VCR/DVD or a television with a built-in digital receiver. You will also need an aerial capable of receiving a digital signal.
Most household aerials should be up to the task but some people may need a replacement. Approved installers will be able to advise you if you need a replacement.
Setup and connectivity
Setting yourself up to receive Freeview will be dependent on what equipment you have.
You can see what your configuration might look like by clicking on the link below.
Should you need any additional digital equipment, make sure they have the “digital tick” logo. This will ensure their compatibility with digital signals after the switchover.
Note: If you are eligible for government assistance, then your designated installation company will install and set it up for you.
