Share files around your home quickly and easily

HomeGroup is a new feature in Windows 7 that allows you to easily share your files, photos, videos and printers with other computers on your home network. HomeGroup will only work with other Windows 7 computers on your network.

Creating a HomeGroup

  1. When you join your network select 'Home network' as the location.
  2. Set network location
  3. HomeGroup set up will begin automatically. You'll be asked what you want to share on your network – tick the boxes for the types of files you'd like to share, then click 'Next' to continue.

  5. Your HomeGroup will be created and you will see a screen that shows a password that you'll need to use for other computers to join your HomeGroup.

Your HomeGroup has now been created and is ready to be joined by other Windows 7 computers on your home network.

Joining a HomeGroup

To connect other Windows 7 computers to your HomeGroup follow the steps below.

  1. Click the Start button and type Sharing into the search box. Click on 'Network and Sharing Center'.
  2. You'll see a screen similar to the one below. Click 'Available to Join' next to 'HomeGroup' (see below).
  3. HomeGroups available to join
  4. You will be told that a HomeGroup has been found - click the 'Join now' button.
  5. Join now
  6. Windows will ask if you would like to share any of your own files with other members of the HomeGroup. Tick the boxes next to the type of files you'd like to share and click 'Next'.
  7. Join HomeGroup sharing options
  8. Enter the HomeGroup's password to join.

Your computer should now have successfully joined your HomeGroup.
